Valentine Hut was built in 1955 by the Snowy Mountains Authority to support hydrologists monitoring precipitation and stream flows in the upper Geehi catchment. Its cheerful name and red paint with white hearts were a whimsical nod to its Valentine Creek location and its striking appearance in the snow.
Though originally utilitarian, the hut became a beloved waypoint for skiers and walkers traversing the Munyang Corridor. It housed SMA radio gear and was flanked by two prefabricated snow huts used as bedrooms. The foundations of a tall aerial mast remain visible to the south.
Valentine Hut measures approximately 4m × 3.5m and is constructed of timber and weatherboards with a corrugated iron roof and wooden floor. It includes a Raeburn wood heater, steel sink, and small rear storeroom. A toilet and woodshed stand nearby.
In 2016, a steel subframe was installed to stabilize the structure. The hut remains dry, weatherproof, and visually distinctive.
Valentine Hut is listed in the KNP Plan of Management Schedule L.123 and holds KHA reference number 117379. Restoration has focused on structural integrity and preserving its unique visual identity. The hut is actively monitored and remains a key shelter in the alpine network.
